Built as a cathedral in 537 AD, converted to a mosque after 1453, secularised as a museum in 1934, and reopened as an active mosque in 2020, Hagia Sophia has worn every layer of Istanbul's history under one dome. Visitors can still see Christian mosaics alongside Islamic calligraphy inside.
