Traveling overland across the South Caucasus got easier this year. Azerbaijan Railways reinstated the Baku-Tbilisi night train on 26 May 2026 after a six-year suspension, and the service now runs nightly between the two capitals.
The train uses modern Stadler sleeper rolling stock with roughly 200 beds across three classes, a dining car, and a VIP lounge. The journey takes about 9.5 hours: departing Tbilisi at 9pm arrives in Baku by 6:24am, while departing Baku at 11:10pm arrives in Tbilisi by 8:41am.
An Important Caveat for International Travelers
For now, tickets are only available to Azerbaijani citizens and citizens of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Azerbaijan. Travelers who need an e-visa for Azerbaijan — including those from the US, EU, UK, Australia, and New Zealand — are not currently permitted to cross the border checkpoints on this route, so this reopening isn't yet the easy visa-free rail link many international slow-travel fans have been hoping for.
