San Francisco's most photographed landmark is about to see fresh construction activity. The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District has confirmed that a major new phase of structural restoration and seismic retrofit work is scheduled to begin in Fall 2026, covering roughly half of the bridge, with the remaining portion to be bid separately at a later date.
A related contract, Phase 3B of the ongoing seismic retrofit program, is set to run from early 2026 through 2036 and will repaint the south tower above the roadway as part of the structural work.
What Visitors Should Expect
Because the Bridge's iconic International Orange paint job is maintained continuously as routine upkeep, visitors shouldn't expect the bridge to look dramatically different day to day — but travelers planning a visit around specific viewpoints, like Battery East or the Marin Headlands, should check the district's site for any temporary access changes as construction phases ramp up through 2026.
